Several years ago, an old friend found a massive yellow cedar slab that had been forgotten outside behind someone's shop for over 30 years!
Most species of wood would have turned to dirt in that time, but not yellow cedar. It is remarkably rot resistant and stable. This plate shows well over 100 years of growth and came from a tree that grew for over 500 years.
Zach's treatment of the rim in this plate is highly unconventional, and yet it works because the balance is right. Intersecting curves and planes are crisp and well defined.
