Sitka, Alaska 2017
bowl measures 7" X 1 3/4"
This is one of the very last bowls in my stock from a big Sitka Spruce that died and was cut for firewood. This bowl shows the wavy grain that held the tree through many storm at the buttressed base of the tree.
This stump wood tends to be denser and heavier than the wood higher in a tree, which is known as an excellent airplane wood for its strength and lightweight.
There are subtly blue/green streaks running through the wood that show the very first beginnings of spalting, which would have eventually turned back into dirt over a couple hundred years.
And speaking of years...I haven't counted, but I'm guessing there are at least 100 growth rings in this 7 inch bowl. It's always fun to hand a bowl to my kids and ask them to count. :)
This bowl is light in color and will hold jewelry or other small items.
