bowl measures 13" X 2 5/8"
This bowl comes from the lower section of an ancient alder tree that my son and I carried out on our backs in the Spring of 2016.
I turned the rotten wood off while this bowl was still a large wet block of wood fresh from the forest. Once I reached sound wood I stopped and finished with a lip to perch above the thru knot that shows how the tree healed from a discarded branch.
The center of the bowl is rich with black transition lines that separate the white spalting from the normal rich color of aged alder.
My customers respond well to bowls with natural voids such as this one, and I've been surprised to hear that many even use this sort of bowl for salads with no small pieces and not much dressing. It will also serve as a perfect fruit bowl, or a fine display bowl on a special table or mantel.
