bowl measures 13 1/2 X 4"
This bowl weighs a little over two pounds, so when I stop and think about carrying a 60 pound block of wood out of the forest to make this bowl, I have to wonder: am I crazy?
I probably am. I'm just obsessed with finding amazing old trees. The story this bowl tells is of an alder that grew to gargantuan proportions and died at an age so old that official records are considerably younger than this tree—about 120 years for this tree with record red alder at 80 to 100 years.
The coloring is just what the tree and forest came up with: deep reddish brown from age and lighter and darker coloring from the natural spalting that occurs when fungus first enters the wood to begin the decomposition process.
This will make an excellent large salad or fruit bowl.
