bowl measures 4" X 1"
I spent a couple minutes with a 30X stereo microscope and counted 252 growth rings in this four inch wide bowl. Give or take a few...it's not an easy thing to count :)
That means this branch was likely 350-400 years old, and the tree may well have been double that.
The color and grain of ancient hemlock pack a lot into a small area. I sanded this bowl by hand to a very fine grit and oiled with multiple coats of tung oil to bring the grain out.
I am guessing this bowl will hold some special small jewelry, but it could also hold something like a smaller glass ball.
Story:The tree this bowl came from blew over near my house and fell into the ocean. I spotted it as it drifted past my house. I salvaged the tree by towing it home, branches and all!
This was an exceptionally slow growing tree because the middle of the tree had rotted out. Only a few inches of sound wood could be found on the outside of the tree, even at the base where it was over three feet (one meter) across.
