Because western hemlock is a bear to turn on the lathe, I don't normally bother turning a hemlock bowl unless I think it has potential to be something special. So I generally have a concrete plan when I turn a hemlock bowl.
This one just worked our right as I hoped. I wanted to have equal sized loose knots in both sides of the rim of a bowl—and I got very lucky. The balance could not have been better.
I'm hoping the two knots remind you that this bowl came from a tree that until a few years ago, was living a healthy life. A storm rolled through Sitka and the tree blew over. I cut some for firewood to heat our little cabin, and a small amount went into bowl stock.
This platter would be great for holding fruit, muffins, cookies...that sort of thing. My wife has several sizes of platters like this and just loves serving her amazing baking on these.
