bowl measures 8" X 3 3/4"

This is an unusual bowl for me because it's both tall and shallow.  As always, I shape a bowl based upon three main factors:
1.  What will show the most unique features of the bowl.
2.  An aesthetic and artist flowing shape
3.  A functional space

I first shaped the outside of the bowl to show the outstanding striations in the rim and features on the side of the bowl.  When I shaped the interior of the bowl it became clear that the best presentation would only go a little under halfway into the bowl.  So I stopped!

But I couldn't call the bowl done, because the bowl would have cracked, so I removed another half of the bowl from the underside.

I should note that this bowl still has very fine tool marks, because it was turned while still very wet and left to dry.

I never know what customers will do with bowls, but my best guess is either a display piece or for bracelets or other larger jewelry.  Every person who has seen this bowl has said "Wow!"  So maybe it's just good for getting a "wow" out of your friends.  ;)

Story: In the late Winter of 2017 this elderberry bush came down as part of a parking lot expansion at a friend's house.

The wood was left on the ground to rot as unfit for even firewood...until I stopped by to look at a mountain ash tree that also was cut.  When I saw several elderberry burls it seemed like a "what the heck" moment.

So glad I salvaged these and uncovered the hidden beauty.  Each hole is where a bud was growing and a leaf would have come out again.  Elderberry has a hollow pith (center) so normally you just see a single hole in the middle of the tree and in each branch.
