There's a lot happening in this little bowl.
The bowl came from high in a grand old mountain ash tree, right near the top where the main trunk forked in a Y. You can see the knots of both branches and the high figured grain between and below the branches.
The beautiful grain is created from what is called reaction wood: wood that must resist splitting and the stresses of gravity and wind.
I'm fond of bowl interiors curve beyond vertical, partly because they are so easy to scoop loose items with your hands, and partly because the shape just feels rightly balanced in a broad shorter bowl. As I've said many times: there's a reason that a high percentage of very old bowls display this shape.
This bowl would go well on a coffee table or mantel. My customers tell me these also work well for candy and nuts, and I know loose change or keys also sit well and are easy to remove in such a bowl.
