Here's a fun bowl where I couldn't help but to sneak a knot hole right under the rim. I was joking that this could be the overflow for milk in your cereal, a bit like a bathtub overflow.
The real reason I put the knot there was to show you how a tree grows around a loose knot—which is what forms when a tree decides to discard a branch but the branch hasn't fallen off yet.
You'll also see a black healed-over scar in the base of this bowl that goes about half way into the base. I shaped this bowl so you can see the scar on the inside of the base, but also see how it grew over into strong wood again on the outside of the base when you flip the bowl over.
That's the amazing thing about trees and wood: always growing, always healing from past events. There's wisdom in that!
