Pictures just don't convey the coolness of this bowl...The scar that splits the edge of the rim really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated.
We'll never know what injured this mountain ash tree—it could have been a kid with a hatchet or a truck backing over the lawn of the historic downtown Sitka house that this tree grew in front of.
I got lucky in the placement of the wood in this plate. The scar and healed over section are in the rim of the plate but not in the main body of the plate.
There's a fine line when shaping wood like this between taking too little, which would leave it awkward and heavy, and too much, which could lead to flying chunks and missing what I wanted to show.
One unique feature of this bowl is that the narrow gap between the older and newer sections of wood is just wide enough to slip in a business card and the main bowl of the plate would hold a small stack of business cards. I've done this with a bowl I kept for myself that came from right next to the plate in this tree.
On the other hand, this would be a good cookie plate or would serve well for loose change, keys, or a wallet.
